And we're pretty excited about this one.

Better yet, we didn't install ours as the standard front-facing version.

Our showroom Generation 6020 is configured as the three-sided bay fireplace, giving you an incredible view of the fire from the front and both sides.

It's installed, burning and ready to see in our Roanoke showroom.

Pictures look good.

Video looks better.

But standing in front of a 60-inch fireplace with flames visible from three sides?

That's different.

What Is the Kozy Heat Generation 6020?

The Generation 6020 is one of the newest direct-vent gas fireplaces from Kozy Heat Fireplaces, a manufacturer we've trusted for years at Skyline Hearth & Fire.

But calling the Generation simply another linear gas fireplace doesn't really explain what Kozy Heat created.

The Generation was designed as an extremely versatile architectural fireplace platform, giving homeowners, builders and designers considerably more freedom when designing the entire fireplace wall.

The fireplace features a massive 60-inch-wide by 20-inch-high front viewing area, clean contemporary lines and up to 50,000 BTUs per hour of input.

But the dimensions aren't what make this fireplace so interesting.

It's what you can do with it.

One Fireplace. Four Completely Different Designs.

This might be the feature we love most about the Generation 6020.

Kozy Heat designed one fireplace platform that can be configured in four different ways:

• Front-facing
• Left-corner
• Right-corner
• Three-sided bay

That changes the entire design conversation.

Most fireplaces dictate what the wall has to look like.

The Generation gives us considerably more freedom to make the fireplace work with the architecture of the room.

And that's exactly why we chose the three-sided bay configuration for our showroom.

Instead of only seeing the fire while standing directly in front of the fireplace, the bay configuration opens the fireplace visually from both sides.

Walk across the showroom and the fire stays visible.

Stand off to one side and you're still looking directly into the fireplace.

Move around the room and the fireplace changes with your perspective.

That's very difficult to appreciate in a photograph.

You really need to walk around it.

Why We Chose the Three-Sided Bay for Our Showroom

We could have installed the Generation as a standard linear fireplace.

That would have looked great.

But what's the fun in that?

We wanted our showroom display to demonstrate what makes this fireplace different from the dozens of other linear fireplaces homeowners can find online.

The three-sided bay configuration does exactly that.

It creates a much more architectural appearance and allows the fireplace to project visually into the room instead of simply disappearing into a flat wall.

For the right project, imagine this fireplace:

At the end of a large fireplace wall.

Separating two living areas.

Projecting into an open-concept great room.

Anchoring a lake-house living space.

Integrated into an architectural feature wall where the fire needs to be visible from several areas of the room.

Now we're not just choosing a fireplace.

A Modern Linear Fireplace That Doesn't Look Like Every Other Linear Fireplace

Modern linear fireplaces have exploded in popularity.

And for good reason.

They're clean.

They're dramatic.

They work extremely well with contemporary architecture, large televisions, floor-to-ceiling stone and modern fireplace walls.

But there's also a problem.

Some of them are starting to look awfully similar.

Black rectangle.

Flame.

Some glass underneath it.

Congratulations.

We have achieved fireplace.

Kozy Heat clearly decided that wasn't enough.

The Generation combines a large flame presentation with multiple layers of lighting, interior options and media choices that allow the same fireplace to take on completely different personalities.

The Lighting System Is Seriously Impressive

This deserves its own section because it's one of the first things you'll notice when you see the Generation operating.

The Generation 6020 incorporates a multicolor LED ember-bed lighting system below the fire.

Instead of being stuck with one fixed lighting effect, the appearance beneath the flames can be adjusted.

You can keep the lighting warm and traditional.

You can make it subtle.

Or you can give the fireplace a much more contemporary personality.

Then add the top accent lighting.

Then add the reflective black glass interior.

Then add the flames.

And because our display is three-sided, you're watching that entire presentation from multiple directions.

That's where photographs stop doing the fireplace justice.

There's a tremendous amount of visual depth happening inside this thing.

Traditional Logs or Modern Media? Your Call.

One of the other things we like about the Generation is that Kozy Heat didn't force it into one particular design style.

A modern fireplace doesn't automatically mean you have to give up the appearance of wood.

The Generation offers media choices including detailed weathered logs, birch logs and geometric spheres, along with glass and other decorative media options depending on the selected configuration.

That means the fireplace can lean very different directions.

Want modern architecture but still love the look of burning wood?

Go with one of the log presentations.

Want an ultra-contemporary feature wall?

That's where the geometric spheres and modern media completely change the personality.

The fireplace architecture stays clean.

You choose what happens inside it.

50,000 BTUs: This Isn't Just Decoration

The Generation looks incredible.

But it isn't simply decorative.

The Generation 6020 has a maximum input of 50,000 BTUs per hour on both natural gas and propane.

The natural-gas model can turn down to approximately 27,000 BTUs, while the propane model can turn down to approximately 26,000 BTUs.

That turndown capability matters.

There are plenty of Virginia days when you want a fire without needing 50,000 BTUs running continuously.

Fall evening?

Turn it down.

Mild winter afternoon?

Turn it down.

Cold January night?

Now you've got some horsepower available.

That's the advantage of having both the atmosphere of a luxury fireplace and meaningful controllable heat.

Yes, It's a Direct-Vent Fireplace

The Generation 6020 is a direct-vent gas fireplace.

And because we still hear some interesting theories about direct-vent fireplaces, it's worth explaining what that actually means.

A direct-vent fireplace uses a sealed combustion system.

Combustion air is supplied from outside while combustion gases are safely exhausted outdoors.

At the same time, the fireplace delivers usable heat into the home.

No, that does not mean all of your heat simply disappears outside.

If you've been told direct vent automatically means you're “sending all the heat outside,” give that article a read.

There's a little more engineering involved than that.

Heat Management Matters — Especially on Modern Fireplace Walls

One of the biggest changes we've seen in fireplace design throughout Roanoke, Lynchburg, Forest, Bedford and Smith Mountain Lake is the move toward complete fireplace feature walls.

Customers aren't simply walking into our showroom asking:

“What fireplace should I buy?”

They're asking:

“Can you build this entire wall?”

They want fireplaces incorporated with televisions, stone, large-format tile, mantels, cabinetry, shelving, lighting and other architectural features.

That's where fireplace design gets more technical.

Because we're no longer simply thinking about where the fireplace goes.

We're thinking about where the heat goes.

The Generation 6020 requires an approved heat-management method such as Kozy Heat's Komfort Zone Kit or an approved vented-cavity system, depending on the installation design.

That allows the enclosure and surrounding materials to be designed according to Kozy Heat's installation requirements.

This becomes especially important when we're designing around televisions, mantels and heat-sensitive finish materials.

A fireplace wall isn't just a pretty Pinterest picture.

There's framing behind it.

Venting.

Gas.

Electrical.

Clearances.

Air movement.

Heat management.

Combustible-material restrictions.

Noncombustible-material requirements.

And somewhere in the middle of all of that, everything still needs to look like somebody designed it intentionally.

That's what we do.

Can You Put a TV Above the Kozy Heat Generation 6020?

Probably one of the first questions we're going to hear is:

“Can I put my TV above it?”

In many properly designed Generation installations, a television can be incorporated into the overall fireplace wall when the approved heat-management system, required clearances and television manufacturer's requirements are addressed during the design.

Notice we didn't say:

“Sure. Hang it wherever you want.”

Fireplace walls need to be designed as systems.

The fireplace, framing, venting, heat management, finish materials, mantel and television placement all affect one another.

That's exactly why we encourage homeowners to involve us before framing begins whenever possible.

It's considerably easier to design everything correctly from the beginning than to discover halfway through the project that somebody framed the wall six inches too shallow because Bob watched three YouTube videos Saturday night.
